There’s Better Roofing Underlayment than Asphalt

Posted on

Asphalt has been “king” for a long time as far as roofing underlayment goes, but there is a better underlayment for Salem roofing now.

For years, the industry standard for roofing underlayment has been asphalt underlayment (felt paper). Asphalt roofing underlayment has been an acceptable choice, but over time, technology improves. This has been the case with roofing underlayment in recent years. GAF rolled out a new, synthetic roofing underlayment called Deck-Armor (TM) Premium Breathable Roof Deck Protection. Salem roofers need to be extra-concerned when it comes to moisture-wicking and fungal growth prevention, because the Salem, Oregon area generally has a very moist climate. With that said, Slate & Slate Roofing feels that roofing contractors in Salem should primarily use Deck-Armor roofing underlayment. Here are a few reasons why:

  • They create a better aesthetic for your finished roof. Deck-Armor lies flat on roofs without wrinkling. This means that your finished roof will be more even, as it will lay flat against your roof. Asphalt underlayment tends to wrinkle and buckle.
  • They are rot and fungal growth resistant. This is especially important in Oregon, as moisture can create rot and fungal growth. Asphalt underlayment is more prone to threats from rot and fungal damage.
  • Deck-Armor is stronger than 30-pound felt paper by over 600% according to testing done by GAF.
  • It is breathable. It will allow for moisture to escape your attic, which will prevent situations involving mold and mildew from creating structural decay (a very costly fix).
  • You can get up to a Lifetime Limited Warranty from GAF when installed with Lifetime Shingle Roofs. This can provide you with some extra security for your home.
  • The product is lighter weight than asphalt underlayment, which puts less wear and tear on the structure of your home.
