Check Your Roof Before Summer!

Posted on

If your roof needs attention in the summer, you need to inspect it early and hire a Salem roofer as soon as possible.

As we’ve previously pointed out, summer is the busy season for Salem roofing contractors, because they can’t do much work during the rainy season and their calendars get backed up. We mentioned that it’s important to give your roofers a call as soon as possible when you notice damage that has been done to your roof. However, we realize that some of these risk factors or damages are less obvious than others. In this article, we’re going to teach you some tricks to examine your roof after an Oregon fall and winter.

Tree branches can cause serious problems for your roof if they’re allowed to scrape against your shingles. Oregon has a lot of tall pine trees, which are beautiful, but be careful about letting them have any contact with your roof. Check to ensure that there have not been branches scraping against your shingles, as this can strip granules from them. The granules on the shingles are a protective barrier, and if they’re removed, your roof’s life expectancy can go way down! If you’ve had a tree scraping at your roof, don’t hesitate to call us. Additionally, leaves and pine needles can cause problems if they’re allowed to pile up. This can trap moisture, which puts unnecessary hardship on your roof.

Mold is another common issue that Salem roofers see. Oregon is a very moist place, which creates the ideal environment for mold to grow. Mold can eat away at your roofing material, which can cause leaks over time. You can identify mold by looking for discoloration in your roof. If you see discoloration, give us a call for a free estimate. Mold doesn’t necessarily require the installation of a new roof; it depends on the severity of the problem. The quicker mold is caught, the less damage it causes, and therefore the cheaper the repairs. Don’t try to pressure wash your roof. That will cause more damage.

Gutter clogging can cause problems as well. As precipitation is wicked away to your gutters, sometimes obstructive materials are carried with it. If your gutters become clogged, they can become damaged, but they can also lead to water pooling on the roof due to the water having no place to run off to. Be sure to consider safety first, but most customers are able to manually unclog their gutters with their hands. Be sure to use gloves and exercise caution.

If you’re experiencing these issues or any others and can’t repair the problem yourself, give us a call and we will give you a free quote. Call our Salem, Oregon office today at (503) 585-2338!
