Better Looking and More Effective Roofing Valleys

Many roofing contractors choose to either use metal flashing or ice and water membrane barriers for valley protection. Some just use 30 pound felt and call it a day. At Slate & Slate Roofing, we like to use both ice and water membrane barriers and metal flashing, and here’s why: you can never be too cautious when it comes to securing the edges of your roofing materials from moisture. Using metal alone, you can face condensation problems that will cause moisture damage at your roof’s joints over time. Using just ice and water barrier can take away the benefit metal flashings give, which includes friction reduction (to wick water away).

Many roofing issues, especially in Oregon, occur around the valley. Keep this in mind when you are collecting quotes for your roof, and ask your Salem roofing company about using both ice and water barriers and metal flashing. Unfortunately, many of the jobs we are called out to fix are on roofs that were done relatively recently, where the roofing contractor decided to cut corners (or the homeowner instructed them to in order to save money). There are places where roofing costs can be reduced safely, but valleys are not one of those places.
